The filly had previously lacerated her tongue on a rat chain and monitoring of this laceration had led to the observation that the filly had a foul smelling breath<\/span>.<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\"> The filly was subsequently endoscoped and a foreign body identified. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">Under sedation a portion of a twig was seen to be embedded in the wall of the right mainstem bronchus. <\/span>A<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">nd was surrounded by an amount of purulent discharge. In a slightly laborious procedure taking two hours the twig was finally snared using a transendoscopic loop and was removed from the trachea<\/span>.<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\"> The filly was continued on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. A subsequent endoscopy the following morning showed no evidence of a residual foreign body and the filly was discharged.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"874\" height=\"655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imv-imaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img_0681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.imv-imaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img_0681.jpg 874w, https:\/\/www.imv-imaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img_0681-564x423.jpg 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 874px) 100vw, 874px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"879\" height=\"659\" src=\"https:\/\/www.imv-imaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img_0682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.imv-imaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img_0682.jpg 879w, https:\/\/www.imv-imaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img_0682-564x423.jpg 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 879px) 100vw, 879px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Fast forward four months\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">She was re-admitted in June for endoscopic removal of a foreign body from the trachea I had identified during a tracheal wash<\/span>.<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\"> It was quite by chance that I was even at this trainer\u2019s yard but no one else was available. The head lad reminded me that we had taken a twig out previously. <\/span>S<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">o I thought we should have a look again. She had been training well but coughed occasionally and still had foul smelling breath. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">Endoscopy on the day of admission revealed another portion of a twig at a similar location within the right mainstem bronchus.<\/span> B<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">ut it\u2019s length could not be ascertained from the end-on view (See the video). The twig was snared using a transendoscopic loop. <\/span>A<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\">nd successful removal revealed a 1cm x 23cm long stick with intermittent barbs and thorns down its length<\/span>.<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-weight: normal;\"> Extraction of the twig required a fair amount of traction to free it from the wall of the bronchus and produced a prolonged epistaxis.
