This will be seen as a hypoechoic &lsquo;shadow&rsquo; resulting in poor image quality or non-visualisation of anatomy. It is caused by air being trapped under\/around hair and skin, thereby preventing good transmission of the ultrasound waves into the patient.<\/p>\n<h3>Patient preparation<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Hair removal\n<ul>\n<li>A clip area that is too large is better than too small<\/li>\n<li>Ensure good communication with the owners about the amount of hair to be removed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Guide for area to be clipped for complete abdominal scan<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"__mcenew\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent00.net\/hubfs\/7971300\/Imported_Blog_Media\/patientprep3-2.png\" alt=\"patient prep\" data-id=\"41408\" width=\"751\" style=\"width: 751px\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cranial <\/strong>&ndash; extend to xiphoid process (blue arrow)and follow the costal arch (grey arrow heads) dorsolaterally on left and right abdominal wall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caudal <\/strong>&ndash; extend to pubic symphysis<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"__mcenew\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent00.net\/hubfs\/7971300\/Imported_Blog_Media\/patientprep1-2.png\" alt=\"patient prep\" data-id=\"41409\" width=\"633\" style=\"width: 633px\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dorsal and lateral <\/strong>&ndash; extend to the sub lumbar muscles (red arrow heads), following the costal arch&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clean the skin as required\n<ul>\n<li>It is important to degrease the skin if required<\/li>\n<li>Dilute chlorhexidine (e.g. Hibiscrub), isopropyl alcohol (spirit) or mild shampoo can be used sparingly<\/li>\n<li>Take care if the skin is inflamed prior to examination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Ultrasound gel\n<ul>\n<li>Apply liberally in the direction of hair growth<\/li>\n<li>Aim to avoid any air in layer of gel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Time\n<ul>\n<li>Wait for the gel to absorb into the skin, ideally 5 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Application of warmed gel decreases absorption time<\/li>\n<li>Increased contact time of gel on the skin improves image quality (there can be as much as 50% improvement)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Scan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Through the duration of the examination the gel will absorb and dry out; application of gel during the examination is usually required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Scan location<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The features of an ideal location are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quiet room<\/li>\n<li>Ability to darken<\/li>\n<li>Good stable table, height adjustable is preferred<\/li>\n<li>Height adjustable seating for ultrasonographer<\/li>\n<li>Comfortable bedding for the patient to lie on<\/li>\n<li>If echocardiography is being performed a cardiac cut out table or table top will be required<\/li>\n<li>Chemical restraint may be required<\/li>\n<li>Allow sufficient time; approximately 30 mins would be recommended for an abdominal ultrasound examination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Post-scan<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remove gel from the patient&rsquo;s skin gently.
