This time last year, few of us\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ould have imagined th<\/span>e trajectory that global events would take<\/span>, or the\u00a0<\/span>myriad\u00a0<\/span>impact<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0th<\/span>ose events\u00a0<\/span>would<\/span>\u00a0have on every single one of us.\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>uch<\/span>\u00a0of the fallout ha<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>been of a personal nature. Our<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>social lives,<\/span>\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>both\u00a0<\/span>mental and physical<\/span>, including that of\u00a0<\/span>friends<\/span>\u00a0and loved ones<\/span>)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0financial security,<\/span>\u00a0hobbies<\/span>, celebrations, and more<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0businesses of the world<\/span>\u00a0have\u00a0<\/span>also been\u00a0<\/span>impacted<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Every industry has\u00a0<\/span>had to change and adapt<\/span>, some to increased demand \u2013 who\u2019d have guessed that a pandemic\u00a0<\/span>would\u00a0<\/span>boost sales of compost by 250% <\/span>\u2013<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and some to reduced demand\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>we are all acutely aware of the lack of trade going the way of the travel industry.\u00a0<\/span>The majority of<\/span>\u00a0businesses have had to change their ways of working<\/span> to a greater or lesser extent.<\/span> Some have\u00a0<\/span>found incredibly creative solutions to the new problems they\u2019ve faced<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Vet<\/span><\/p>\n

The veterinary profession has, for the most part, been mercifully resilient, as pe<\/span>t-owners\u00a0<\/span>display heart-warming determination to keep caring for their\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>predominantly<\/span>)\u00a0<\/span>furry friends as best as they possibly can<\/span>. Pet ownership has also increased significantly<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>either\u00a0<\/span>as an antidote to<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>loneliness\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0lockdown, or\u00a0<\/span>as motivation to\u00a0<\/span>exercise<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Practices dealing exclusively with food animal species have<\/span>, for the most part, avoided\u00a0<\/span>many<\/span>\u00a0of the issues<\/span>\u00a0arising from COVID-19<\/span>\u00a0due to the\u00a0<\/span>critical nature of the part they play in feeding the population<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and the fact that most of their work is performed outdoors.\u00a0<\/span>Equine-specific practices have also<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>been less dramatically affected. Again likely d<\/span>ue<\/span>\u00a0to the fact that\u00a0<\/span>a lot of the<\/span>ir<\/span>\u00a0work can be done outside<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0However,<\/span>\u00a0both food animal and equine practices have suffered the same\u00a0<\/span>staff shortages\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>have affected the small animal sector<\/span>, and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>t would be disingenuous<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to say\u00a0<\/span>that veterinary practices have been\u00a0<\/span>completely\u00a0<\/span>unscathed. In fact,\u00a0far\u00a0from it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Equine\"Vet<\/span><\/p>\n

The most recent (fifth) RCVS survey<\/span>, published on 23<\/span>rd<\/span>\u00a0December<\/span>\u00a02020<\/span>3<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>reveals that\u00a0<\/span>many practices are still using\u00a0<\/span>remote consulting\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>a greater or lesser<\/span>\u00a0extent, and\u00a0<\/span>a study published by CM Research\u00a0<\/span>on 22<\/span>nd<\/span>\u00a0January 2021<\/span>4<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>suggests that almost half (49%) of UK practices are still offering<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018kerbside\u2019 appointments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Home visits, nurse appointments, and EMS placements have all\u00a0<\/span>taken a hit<\/span>3<\/span>\u00a0as practices attempt to prioritise, often with reduced staff\u00a0<\/span>numbers due to illness, self-isolation, or \u2018bubble\u2019 working practices.\u00a0<\/span>Routine preventative pet healthcare has seen particula<\/span>rly dramatic impacts \u2013 60% of UK practices either reduced or stopped their\u00a0<\/span>vaccination work<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0microchipping and pet passport\u00a0<\/span>appointments declined in number, and\u00a0antiparasiticide\u00a0sales\u00a0<\/span>fell.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Staff mental health has<\/span>\u00a0been strained like\u00a0never before<\/span>, as workloads\u00a0<\/span>increase<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0for those<\/span>\u00a0\u2018<\/span>manning the fort<\/span>\u2019<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0boredom, guilt and loneliness\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>affect<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0those\u00a0<\/span>furloughed, or\u00a0<\/span>self-isolati<\/span>ng<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as a result of<\/span>\u00a0illness or the\u00a0<\/span>contact tracing scheme.<\/span>\u00a0The silver lining to this cloud is that mental\u00a0<\/span>health<\/span> awareness is at an all-time high. Colleagues are looking out for each other, and bosses are actively seeking out <\/span>mental health\u00a0<\/span>training and support resources for their teams.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Uncertainty about the future has also taken its toll,\u00a0<\/span>with 46% of UK respondents to the CM Research study saying they\u00a0<\/span>expect the situation will get worse before it gets better.<\/span>\u00a0(Note that\u00a0<\/span>whilst\u00a0<\/span>this study was published\u00a0<\/span>during the third national lockdown. The responses were gathered in December 2020, prior to <\/span>said\u00a0<\/span>lockdown.)<\/span>\u00a0At the time of writing, the Prime Minister has just announced his plans for\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0\u2018roadmap\u2019 out of\u00a0<\/span>the restrictions.<\/span> And I suspect many\u00a0<\/span>of us will have marked\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>21<\/span>st<\/span> June. Auspiciously, the longest day of the year<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in our calendars in some\u00a0<\/span>positive way!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite all of this,\u00a0<\/span>clinic revenue is either unchanged or improved for the majority of UK practices, and client numbers are, on average, up.\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>\u00a0significant majority (more than 75%) of practices state that\u00a0<\/span>business is either back to normal, or near normal.<\/span> Only 2% of practices in Western Europe that closed temporarily are still closed. And onl<\/span>y 3% of practices have closed permanently.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CPD\u00a0<\/span>has been<\/span>\u00a0extremely popular throughout the pandemic, particularly in the early stages when those on furlough<\/span>, ill, or self-isolating\u00a0<\/span>had the opportunity to access a\u00a0<\/span>plethora of\u00a0<\/span>fantastic, often\u00a0<\/span>freely available<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>online content<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a diagnostic imaging company, we have gained insight from our customers throughout this pandemic as to how<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0above mentioned\u00a0staff shortages, new ways of working and other factors may have impacted the use of diagnostic imaging in practice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0next article in this\u00a0<\/span>series.<\/span> We\u2019ll explore further the impact that\u00a0<\/span>the pandemic has had on the imaging workflow in practices across the UK. And in subsequent articles we\u2019ll explore ways in which we might be able to address some of those issues.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In summary,\u00a0<\/span>there is no escaping the fact that\u00a0<\/span>this pandemic has\u00a0<\/span>impacted\u00a0<\/span>all of us as individuals, and the\u00a0industry as a whole<\/span>. W<\/span>e\u2019ve all experienced th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0outbreak in different ways<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0some have suffered\u00a0<\/span>appalling personal tragedy; others feel keenly the sting of isolation and loneliness<\/span>; s<\/span>till more carry the burden of responsibility for the ongoing wellbeing of their teams.\u00a0<\/span>Out of that, though, comes hope.\u00a0<\/span>There is<\/span> light at the end of the tunnel.<\/span> We have proven\u00a0<\/span>that as a<\/span>\u00a0group of individuals<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>we can be\u00a0<\/span>adaptable, courageous, kind,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and resilient.<\/span>\u00a0It seems unlikely\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>the world as we\u00a0knew it\u00a0will ever be\u00a0<\/span>quite\u00a0<\/span>the same again. But <\/span>as vets we can\u00a0<\/span>be sure we\u2019ll use this opportunity to make our part of it, our profession, even better than it was before.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
