The wonderful word of endoscopes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Endoscopes are a wonderful piece of equipment but do need to be carefully looked after. It is easy for scopes to be damaged if not used, handled or cleaned in the appropriate manner. This article provides tips on what users should do and how to avoid potential common issues and ultimately how to look after your scope!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using a Scope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. the scope should always be handled with care throughout the entire procedure<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. avoid catching the insertion tube on sharp objects such as instruments <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. avoid letting the distal end of the scope drag along the floor<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. take care when inserting the endoscope into a patient and when removing the scope specifically on teeth as this can cause abrasions\/tears into the scope which will cause damage needing repair<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. be aware of sharp foreign objects that may be in the gastrointestinal tract and ensure that you use an appropriate hood as an added layer of protection<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. take extra care when using the scope on inserting instruments down the instrument channel if the scope is angulated at the distal end to avoid any punctures of the channels<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. ensure the scope is stored effectively in a protected area <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. do not allow the scope to be dropped\/dragged along a surface<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Cleaning a Scope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    As well as the above the appropriate cleaning procedure should be applied. This will invariably involve cleaning the scope in a separate cleaning vessel to that of instruments, some of the instruments are sharp and can cause nicks in the tube when in the same cleaning vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Long Term Effects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Whilst for example, a tear to the distal end of a scope wouldn\u2019t generally result in ANY pain to the animal, there are other significant long term effects if a scope is not looked after properly. The longevity of the equipment could be compromised, costly repairs could be required and if smaller pieces of damage is not picked up on early on, this can result in further damage to the entire scope resulting in further costly repairs and also a higher risk of the scope harboring bacteria and germs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
