We’re thrilled to introduce Janika, a small animal locum veterinary surgeon based in the East Midlands and known as @janikathevet on Instagram. Janika brings a wealth of experience and a passion for ultrasonography, always striving to enhance her skills and share her knowledge. Her journey from overcoming early career challenges to becoming a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in the veterinary field is truly inspiring. Hello all! I am Janika (also known as @janikathevet on Instagram<\/a>) and I am a small animal locum veterinary surgeon working in the East Midlands. I am really excited to become an IMV imaging Brand Ambassador as I have keen interest in ultrasonography and am always looking for ways to improve my skill set, something that is hugely important as a practicing vet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I graduated from University of Nottingham in 2017 and went straight into small animal practice soon after. Unfortunately, things weren\u2019t smooth sailing at the beginning of my career, and I had to leave my first job within 3 months due to lack of support. I found a supportive corporate practice that I spent a year and half at, then moved to a lovely independent practice where we did our own out of hours. However I grappled with imposter syndrome throughout this time because of an earlier set back, a feeling I know a majority of vets face at some point in their career. I will be honest – I used to say to myself that I would only be a vet for the first 3-5 years and then I would find a way out. However now nearly 7 years down the line, I have done a complete 180 and cannot see myself doing anything else!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Instagram page was something I started during the first Covid-19 lockdown to act as a diary all the things I have seen and done, which really helped me with my imposter syndrome. During this time, I also was paying attention to the Black Lives Matter movement which had profoundly moved me. I am of Indian descent and have at many points of my life, including through vet school and my career, experienced and witnessed racism. The veterinary profession in the UK is one of the least diverse professions in the UK (less than 3% of people in the profession identify as Black, Asian or minority ethic compared to 14% of the UK population being in this group). I spent time educating myself on racial discrimination and used my online platform to highlight these issues within the veterinary field. Through raising awareness, I am now involved with BVEDS (British Veterinary and Diversity Society<\/a>) and help them with supporting members of the veterinary profession that are experiencing racial discrimination. I also work with Affinity Futures <\/a>– a veterinary EDI consultancy group with their social media and help facilitate sessions at conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other fantastic opportunities that have come from social media include meeting many amazing, like-minded people and organisations on my page. I really enjoy posting content about cases I have seen and in particular, cases where I have performed abdominal ultrasonography. One case that I shared which will stay with me for a while is a case of Cushing\u2019s disease in a Guinea Pig that I was able to diagnose by seeing an enlarged adrenal gland on the scan. Now that I work as locum, it can be more difficult to get the opportunity to practice my ultra sounding skills. Some small animal practices do not have an ultrasound scanner on site which can also be a limiting factor. I am really excited to work with IMV and get a chance to complete their online abdominal ultrasonography<\/a> course as well as have a play about with the GE VScan Air<\/a>, as well as encouraging small animal vets not be scared of the ultrasound probe and to highlight the multiple uses of ultrasonography in Veterinary Medicine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
