Ultrasound has many clinical applications, and this can mean that throughout the course of a normal working day the machine and its transducers (probes) may be used on several different patients by a number of different operators. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, all this use can lead to contamination of the transducer and the possibility of infection transmission between users and\/or patients. So, how do we keep our ultrasound transducers clean? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Consider a cover. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If the transducer needs to be used in a sterile environment or if we have to scan a patient with open wounds or a superficial infection, then a cover can be used to protect the transducer. Commercial sterile covers and single use sachets of sterile acoustic coupling gel are available. It is also possible to use a sterile glove containing ultrasound gel as makeshift cover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Keep it clean. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Immediately after use the transducers and machine should be cleaned to remove any gross contamination and to prevent any material drying on the transducer which makes it more difficult to remove later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Use water to clean off any gel or gross contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Take care to avoid water entering the transducer connector or any electrical components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Dry with a clean cloth or towel. Be gentle and avoid drying with anything abrasive that may scratch or damage the transducer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      1. Check it over. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Checking the transducer and ultrasound machine regularly is a good idea; identifying damage early may allow a repair to be initiated before the damage worsens and damaged equipment can be removed from use if necessary. Similarly, any damage to the casing or covers of transducers can harbour bacteria and make effective cleaning much more difficult. If in doubt, contact the equipment provider for advice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Any disinfectant will NOT do! <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Many disinfectants, though effective at killing viruses or bacteria, can damage the housing and cables on the transducer. It is important to use a disinfectant recommended by the equipment manufacturer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The recommended products are usually listed within the equipment user or operator manual along with cleaning protocols. The chemical agents used are usually available as impregnated wipes or as solutions that need to be diluted before applying to any equipment. Unfortunately, a product suitable for one system may damage another, so always check! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          If the manual is not available, contacting the equipment provider can help as they should be able to advise on the correct products or supply a replacement copy of the user manual. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Write a record. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Allocating a schedule for cleaning and inspection can help keep equipment performing as it should. Similarly, having a member of the team responsible for cleaning can ensure that inappropriate products or handling are not used when cleaning. A protocol of what to use and when can help in a busy practice environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
