As part of the routine monitoring process used in such cases ‘Five’ was scheduled for regular ultrasound scans of her cervix to ensure that when the first stage of her labour started the staff would have plenty of warning. They could then make sure everything was organised so that they were ready to provide immediate help should any be needed.

The story starts back in February of 1998 when ‘Five’ (so-called because of the number that was painted on her side at the time of capture) and her companion ‘Latabe’ came to West Midlands Safari Park from an elephant orphanage in South Africa. ‘Latabe’, named after a river in the Kruger National Park where the elephants had been found, and ‘Five’ had lost their parents to poachers but were lucky enough to be rescued. They were taken to the orphanage, then flown to Schiphol in the Netherlands. Once safely on the ground they were driven all the way to West Midlands Safari Park, arriving at 2 o’clock one cold Monday morning. Two young bulls also came with them but have since gone on to other centres in Europe to enter a breeding programme (European Endangered species Programme, EEP, run by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) for African elephants. ‘Five’ had become pregnant after pioneering artificial insemination using frozen semen collected from a bull at Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa, and it is breeding programmes like these that will hopefully ensure that these amazing creatures are not poached to extinction. This is in fact the first time ever that a male elephant calf has been born using this technique, and only the second time that any elephant has delivered a live calf after conceiving in this way (the other being a female calf at Vienna Zoo). The semen was collected in Africa and taken to Beauval Zoo in France where it was stored before being used to inseminate ‘Five.’

African elephants are the largest land mammal on Earth and can range in weight from 1800kg to 6800kg! Generally the females are quite a bit smaller than the males, and usually range from 2700kg to 3600kg. ‘Five’ weighs in at 3150kg, and this hardly changed despite giving birth!

‘Sutton’ was born to ‘Five’ at 5pm on the 5th day of the 5th month this year – made even more special by the fact that this is the birthday of the lady who hand-reared her as an orphan in South Africa! He was born at a healthy 100kg, and by the beginning of November was already up to 242kg (about 1kg per day weight gain).

A month before he was born I had visited the safari park along with their vet, Bill Rosie, to join in with one of the routine cervix scans. The scanning is done rectally, in exactly the same way as a vet would scan a cow for pregnancy. If we’re aiming to look at anything much beyond the cervix the probe needs to be mounted on an extension to allow the necessary reach – an elephant cow’s reproductive tract can be over 2.5m long! The cervix is located on the screen and examined to see if it is still tightly shut or whether it is starting to show signs of opening up, which would indicate that the labour process has started.

On the same day we also attempted to scan the calf in the uterus by placing the ultrasound probe on to ‘Five’s skin between her back legs.
